We have noted, with a worrying recurrence, problems of appreciation concerning stencilled lithographs appearing in Grosclaude’s art edition of the “Illuminations” (Lausanne, éditions des Gaules, 1949, 395 print copies).

The 15 lithographs (format 33×25 cm) accompanying this book were, under the direction of Louis Grosclaude, hand colored by the workers of the printing house. Thus, each stencilled lithograph is unique.

Even a sharp eye can confuse these lithographs with an original work of Fernand Léger’s hand. In addition, the confusion is very often amplified by a handwriting of Mr. Grosclaude certifying on the back the lithograph (with details of date and place) as an authentic work of Fernand Léger.

We strongly recommend you to contact our team if a work related to “Illuminations” is proposed to you for acquisition.
